Today February 13th 2020, the second president of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency President Paul Biya clocks 87 years.

Biya Birthday

Mr. Paul Barthelemy Biya Bi Mvondo was born in Mvomeeka, Meyomessala Sub-Division, Dja-et-Lobo Division in the West Region of Cameroon on February 13th 1933. His father was Etienne Mvondo Assam and the mother’s name was Anastasie Eyenga Elle.

He succeeded Ahmadou Ahidjo, the first president of Cameroon and became the second on November 6th two days after Ahidjo’s resignation on November 4th.

According to his biography, from 1948 Mr. Paul Biya attended his primary school in Catholic School Nden. He later went to Saint Tharcissius Pre-seminary, Edea from 1948-50. And from 1950-53, studied at the Minor Seminary Akono. It was in 1953 that Mr. Biya had his BEPC.

From 1954-56, Mr. Biya schooled at Leclerc High School, Yaounde. And, in 1955 he had his 1st Baccalauréat and in 1956, had the 2nd Baccalauréat

Mr. Biya later went to Lycee Louis Le Grand in Paris, then to the faculty of law in University Sorbonne Paris. He also went to an Institute of Political Studies in Paris. It was in the later institute that in 1960, he obtained a degree in public law. And then a Diplomat from Institute des Haute Etudes d’Outre Mer in 1962 and a higher diplomat in Public Law in 1963.

So far he has received over 11 international and national honors. He is the Grand Master of National Orders; Commander of National Order; Grand Commander of Order of Nigeria as well as the Honorary Professor of the University of Beijing.

Mr. Biya was appointed as Head of Missions in the presidency  of The Republic in the year 1962.

In January 1964, he began service as the Cabinet of the Minister of National Education, Youth Affairs and Culture.  In 1965 he became the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Education still serving at Youth Affaires and at Culture.

It was in 1968, that he became Director of the Civil Cabinet of the President of the Republic.

He was latter appointed in January 1968 as Secretary General of the Republic of Cameroon while serving as Director of the Civil Cabinet.

On August 1968, he became Minister, Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic. And in June 1970, he served as Minister of State, Secretary-General of the Presidency.

And, 1975 saw Mr. Biya as the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Cameroon.

On 6th November 1982, the United Republic of Cameroon witnessed the swearing in of Mr. Paul Biya as president and second president in the Country’s history.

Again on January 14th 1984, he was elected as president of the Cameroon. On April 24th 1988 he was re-elected and has since been winning with absolute majority amidst the over 200legalised opposition parties.

Besides academic and political honors, Mr. Biya is an author. He is author of a political essay, Communal Liberalism which was published in 1987 by Editions Marcel Farbre Lausanne. This book has been translated into English, Hebrew and German. The book announced the rise of multi-party system after one-part system.


Today 87 years, Cameroon’s President is married to Chantal Pulcherie Biya. And, he is a father of three children; two boys and a girl.

And, he has served as Cameroon’s President since 1982 till date; 37 years.

After late Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe Mr. Biya is the oldest ruler in the Sub-Saharan Africa. He has also been described as the world’s oldest leader.

Meantime, his current mandate is to end in 2025 when he will be 92years.
