The US State Department refrained from accusing one side or the other, insisting that Yaounde had promised a “thorough investigation” into Wesco’s death. Palladino called on separatist rebels and Cameroonian government forces to begin “an open and unconditional dialogue immediately.” “We have been in contact with senior government security officials in Cameroon and we feel that the victim was caught in the crossfire,” said Robert Palladino, the US spokesperson.
According to official reports, Charles Wesco, the missionary was targeted by terrorists in an attempt to attack a gendarmerie brigade and a university zone, the Cameroon Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo affirmed. Meanwhile, over the social media, several separatists in the English-speaking regions have blamed the death of the American missionary on the Cameroonian army.
According to Mr Beti Assomo, the 44-year-old American missionary was in his vehicle with his wife, son and driver when he suffered a shot from the terrorists ambushed.
“When he was hit at the temple, he was first evacuated to a health centre and then transferred to the Bamenda Regional Hospital where he gave up the ghost,” the minister said in a statement over the state radio, adding that thorough investigation into the case was immediately opened.
The tragedy occurred in Bambui, 14 km from Bamenda, North West region, while a group of armed terrorists had stormed the premises to attack the university zone and the Tubah Gendarmerie Brigade, the district where Bambui is located, according to the minister.
This provoked a confrontation between the military and the Ambazonians resulting in a series of gun shorts around the University of Bamenda.  Four terrorists were neutralized, several wounded in their ranks and four 12-calibre rifles recovered, Beti Assomo explained further but didn’t mention a word about the student and soldier who were equally injured during the exchanges.
