The tragedy unfolded Wednesday, July 18, around 2 pm when the said 70 seaters Garanti express bus leaving Yaounde to Douala in excess speed collided with an embankment and capsised 2 km from the Mbankomo tollgate.
Three deaths were recorded at the time the incident occurred while some suffered severe and minor injuries, eyewitnesses told LeGideon. The toppled bus was lying at the middle of the road in a very bad shape as debris of glasses were littered everywhere on the ground as well as parts of the carcass.

Moreover, some personal belongings, documents, luggage was completely damaged and scattered all over the place. Reports reaching LeGideon also had it that the Yaounde motorized road platoon elements attributed the main cause of the accident to over speeding and recklessness. One of them even explained that the fast-moving bus slipped, hit the embankment and rolled over.
The wounded victims were later rescued and rushed to different hospitals in the capital city. Meanwhile, the elements of road safety transport revealed that the bus driver was arrested, first for speeding at the toll gate, and secondly for not abiding by the law that forbids excess speeding on the highway, LeGideon gathered.

The Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe on reaching the accident scene lamented at the devastating rate of accidents along the country’s highway, stating that this is the umpteenth disaster which is getting out of control.
The minister in a bid to contain these disasters assured that controls would be strengthened at the level of all the travel agencies. “We will check the condition of vehicles, parts, including permits, technical controls. It is unacceptable that we issue documents with such complacency, endangering the lives of Cameroonians,” he said, adding that sanctions will be heavy on those who fail to obey.
