Though between September 2018 and May 2020, Cameroon Development Corporation – CDC Company was out of the banana production market, the Bank of Central African States - BEAC in its recently published Q2-2021 business cycle analysis has revealed that 520 hectares of banana plantations will this year be revamped.

It should be recalled that this was the time when the ongoing Anglophone crisis was at the peak of effects on the state-owned corporation as workers were constantly being attacked. The fighters burnt the company’s processing and storage units even converting the area into training camps, local sources reported.

According to BEAC’s Q2-2021 business cycle analysis, in all Cameroon production areas including the South West where the 520 hectares are to be renovated between April and June 2021, banana production will increase. This there is an opportunity for the corporation to overcome the crippling effects of this war on them.

Besides being the main banana producer in the South West Region of Cameroon, CDC equally exploits rubber and palm oil from its plantations. It was because of the ongoing insecurity in Cameroon that operations in the plantations were halted. This is what led to CDC’s exclusion from the Cameroonian banana production market.

According to the technical committee for the renovation of para-public enterprises – CTR, between 2016 and 2018 CDC witnessed a XAF60.9 billion revenue shortfall. In 2019, it also recorded a net loss of XAF17.9 billion and a XAF14.5 billion cumulated wage debt, the committee added.

Though the corporation went back to production in 2020, it was only able to export 9,521 tons of bananas which is far way lower than normal and very much unsatisfactory.
