Fire Incidents Cut across Four Regions within a Week, Enormous Damage, lives lost

It has been all about ghastly fire incidents across Cameroon over the last one week. The South West, Center, West South West and North West regions of the country recorded enormous material damage and loss of lives from fire incidents.

Fire consumes Nkwen Market

Beginning from the South West Region, two persons lost their lives in a fire incident while business shops worth billions were razed by fire in Yaounde, Center Region, in Bamenda and Bambalang, North West Region, Buea, South West Region and in the West Region.

According to sources, the two people killed by fire on Monday, February 8th, 2021 in Molyko, Buea included an 89-year-old grandmother and her 7-year-old grandson.

The two were charred in flames that took the whole of the house while they were asleep. The house was temporarily constructed out of plank.

We learnt that the house caught fire around 1 a.m. and was so violent that the manual intervention of neighbors could not save the victims from the wild flames.

Shops were brought down by wild flames in the Mendong neighborhood in Yaounde on Sunday evening with little property rescued despite the intervention of both locals and the firefighters. According to eyewitness reports, the fire brigade came late and had to leave the place thrice to fetch water while the fire raged on.

The fire broke out late after 10 pm, consuming several shops before locals could rush to the scene to intervene while waiting for the firefighters who arrived to contain the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings.

Businesspersons in the restive capital of the North West Region, Bamenda are also lamenting over the latest fire incident that ravaged shops in the Mile 4 market, Nkwen.

The fire whose cause is yet to be arrived at razed down dozens of shops to ashes around 10: pm on Monday, February 8th, 2021.

Locals had rushed to the scene to help the situation out but it was too late as several shops were been consumed by the wild flames that could only be reduced by the nearest available firefighters who themselves are late for a befitting remedy. They, however, managed to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

Bambalang, Ngoketunjia Division still in the North West Region equally witnessed wildfire that has cost a businessperson billion within hours. According to the report, the fire had caught a sawmill, burning all wood in stock, including other furniture.

A truck charged with the collection of garbage in Dschang caught fire on Thursday, February 11th in the afternoon, around Government Primary School Dschang. The cause of the fire at the time of this report was unknown.

 Meanwhile, another fire incident claimed the lives of three kids around Marché B in Dschang on the night of Thursday, February 11th. Reports say their mother locked them at home to attend a wake keep. Too late, the firefighting brigade arrived at the scene while little ones had been completely consumed.

The damage incurred across these regions in nearly all the incidents is blamed on limited water supply in the areas. The South West case being the worse of all where locals watched two lives perishing helplessly in the wild flames that could not be brought down easy enough due to lack of water.
