Iraq: Over 20 Killed, 40 Wounded in suicide bombings in Baghdad

At least 20 people have been killed and over 40 wounded in a twin suicide bombing attack in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad.

The incident occurred in an open-air Baghdad clothing market in Tayaran Square in the early hours of today Thursday, January 21st, 2021 as the bombers were being pursued by security forces.

The first suicide bomber claimed to feel sick so that people would gather around him as he rushed into the market in pretense to be in need of help. This was when he detonated his explosives. While the population gathered to rescue the victims, the second suicide bomber detonated own bomb, according to the statement from the ministry.

Though the government in Iraq declared victory in its war against IS at the end of 2017, it was in January 2018, that the last deadly suicide attack in this capital city when 35 people were killed in the same square was recorded.

No group has taken responsibility of the act but to the Iraqi military spokesman Yehia Rasool, the attack was "carried out by two suicide bombers who detonated themselves when pursued by security forces."

Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and one of the largest cities in the Arab world, and compared to its large population it has a small area at just 673 square kilometers
