Foumban Monumental Gateway: Mayor Challenging Sultan over Reconstruction

There is controversy over whom, between the Mayor of Foumban and the Sultan Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya of the fondom should reconstruct the monumental gateway recently raze by fire.

It was on the night of Sunday November 29th, 2020 that the monumental gateway into Foumban Noun Division of the West Region of Cameroon was brought down to ashes. It carried cultural and tradition drawings and inscriptions that dates from centuries ago.

Following the fire whose source remains unknown, purification rituals were done to prepare the gateway for reconstruction. However, it is presently witnessing controversial approach as local and traditional authorities are presenting contrary views on whom, between the mayor and Sultan has to carter for the reconstruction.

It should be recalled that following the purification ceremony Sultan Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya who initiated it took the lead to handle the reconstruction of the burnt gateway, which many believe it was his rightful duty.

However, the former Member of Parliament and the mayor of the town, Hon. Tomaino Ndam Njoya did not welcome the Sultan’s takeover of responsibility. Visiting the reconstruction site on Wednesday, she stopped the works saying that the only authority in charge of this reconstruction is the Council.

The Mayor’s visit and reaction led to revolt from those who rejected her view believing that that the Sultan had the upper hand in the reconstruction of the gateway which is even considered to be sacred. The glasses of the Mayor's car were destroyed during the revolt.

Meantime, it is not certain if the mayor has accepted the fact that the Sultan should go ahead with the work till or she will still come back claiming the council’s right over the gateway reconstruction.
