According to an advert by the ministry of environment in Namibia, tenders have been called up as the country sets to auction elephants due to drought and human-wildlife conflict.

The 170 “high-value” elephants will be sold with specific requirements that include meeting international standards and a permit to export the elephants to the required location.

An advert in the New Era newspaper on Wednesday indicated. “Due to drought and an increase in elephant numbers, coupled with human-elephant conflict incidents, a need has been identified to reduce these populations.”

Giraffe, impala in Namibia

According to the state-owned newspaper, interested parties have up to 29 January to make an offer as far as buying these animals is concerned.

It should be recalled that to generate 1.1m or £820,000 for conservation, last year, the country authorized the sale of at least 1,000 wild animals. Including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and impala for sale, it was said that the pastures in parks across the country dried up living them at risk of dying of starvation.

Namibia and wildlife

The wildlife of Namibia is composed of its flora and fauna. Namibia's endangered species include wild dog, black rhino, oribi and puku.

African Wildlife

Namibia's parks and reserves range from the open bush of the centre and the north where wildlife is relatively plentiful, to the barren and inhospitable coastal strip with its huge sand dunes. The three main tourist attractions for wildlife in Namibia are Etosha National Park, Waterberg National Park and Cape Cross Seal Reserve.
