Information revealed during the second ordinary session of the steering committee of the Education Reform in Cameroon - Parec Program shows that the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education has yet provided an additional XAF57 billion to boost basic education in Cameroon.

It was on November 27, 2020, that the second ordinary session during which information concerning the recent released fund was revealed.

According to the information, the additional funding targets the communities in the Adamaoua, East, Far North, and North regions which have been identified as priority education zones.

In addition to the 12,000 previously planned it will serve for the recruitment of 6,000 more teachers.

The fund will equally be used to increase the volume of free essential textbooks which will be distributed in all the public elementary schools in the country. However, the even distribution of these essential textbooks once bought is questionable because, in the English speaking regions schools have not been effective foe four years.

Also, in the Northern regions Boko Haram insurgency and the lack of schools, even the inaccessibility to available schools by some children, hinders this exercise. To critics, it’s not about teachers and materials but school structures, buildings.

The fund is also scheduled to be used in teaching the new curriculum more than 10,000 teachers and in rural areas to enroll 40,000 pupils in community pre-school centers.

Though drawing from previous educational loans and funding critics question the effective use of this one, Basic Education minister is very much optimistic.

The fund will reinforce “the indicators that prove the quality of education, namely the number of teachers to be recruited, the number of textbooks to be distributed, the textbook/learner ratio, etc”, according to Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, the Minister of Basic Education who welcomed the funds.
