 -Suspends Appearance of Lawyers in Court

As from November 30th, 2020 Cameroonian lawyers will be embarking on a four day nationwide protest. This is as a result of the recent attacks meted on lawyers by administrative authorities, and security officials. The decision was taken in an extra-ordinary session held following the rise in brutality against law practitioners from security officials.

According to the communique, the strike will run from November 30th to December 4th, four days.

The action is spearheaded by the recent military brutality on lawyers in Cameroon most especially how they were brutalized and teargassed in a courtroom of the Bonanjo Court of First Instance in Douala, Economic Capital of Cameroon and the systematic arrest of lawyers under inhumane conditions.

Without a warrant, on Wednesday November 18th, 2020, Barrister Tamfu Richard, Firebrant Human Rights Lawyer, and Maitre Armel Tchuemegne Kenmegne were arrested. They were recently being transferred to the New Bell Prison in Douala.

It was following these rights violating incidents that the Bar Council Executives held an extra-ordinary session to take key decisions. During the session that they resolved to a nationwide strike that will last for four days, from November 30, 2020 to December 4, 2020.

During the four days, throughout the national territory lawyers will boycott all court sessions.

Following the decision, Dr. Paul Chiy, a Barrister, Solicitor, Advocate, Arbitrator & Academic, Magistrate at Cambridge Bench, UK, tweeted “Cameroon Bar barks. On the persecution of lawyers: Nationwide strikes from 30/11/20 - 4/12/20; Suspends UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE the appearance of lawyer in all criminal proceedings& cancels Judicial Honours for Late Batonnier Tchakoute at the Littoral Court of Appeal”.
