The elements of the Regional Division of the judicial police of the Center Region on Monday, November 9th, 2020 seized over 250 kg of gold in Yaoundé.
The precious metal was found in the keeping of two Canadians who according to the Police officers had loaded it in about ten suitcases to be transported to Dubai.
The operation was led by the divisional commissioner Moïse Emane Emane who says “two Canadians were arrested and are currently in custody”.
According to sources of Actu Cameroon, “these foreign traffickers arrived in Cameroon less than a week ago by private jet and were staying in the only 5-star hotel in the capital. They were to leave for Dubai on Tuesday, November 10th, 2020 with the goods. ”
Reports show that the police had been notified of the malicious move of the gang and thus set up an operation that led to the tracking of the smugglers at the Ngoa-Ekelle district.
According to Le Messager, another police source reports that this operation made it possible to get hold of the Cameroonian contact of the alleged gold traffickers. However, the investigations are still underway and it is not yet clear if the said Cameroonian is really the master planner of the gold trafficking.
Meantime, the suitcases containing the precious metal have been placed under seal as investigation proceeds. It should be noted that the more than 250 gold bars also presupposes significant logistical resources and high-level complicity, as remarked by a deputy of the Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People.
According to the Deputy, “This proves that these arrested Canadians are not at their first such operation in Cameroon and that there is a very powerful network that must absolutely be dismantled.”
This is not the first time gold is tracked under trafficking in Cameroon this year. The latest instance is yet to clock a month after a man was apprehended at the Douala International Airport with 20kg of uncut gold estimated at CFAF650million.
