Catholic churches across Cameroon today, October 30th, 2020 dedicated their Holy Masses and other prayers to the mourning of the seven children that lost their lives in the Kumba massacre of Saturday October 24th, 2020.

The church dressings were change into purple and while colors which are the church’s colors of mourning, used during funerals and other related memorial prayers for departed souls.

Aside from the church colors, the readings and Gospel of the day were tilted towards the memory of the children and in relation to the protection of human life.

In Saint Anuarite Parish situated at Carrefour Biyem-Assi, the main celebrant of the Holy Mass, at all necessary intervals invoked God’s mercy on the souls of the kids and prayed that they become intercessors for the return of peace in the North West and South West Regions of the Country were the crisis has been ongoing for the past four years.

Drawing from the Gospel of John Chapter 2:20 “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the Child’s life are now dead,” the celebrant remarked that the life of little children is to be protected and not endangered.

“The Kingdom of God is for those who are like children,” the Rev. Father said. He went further to enlist a number of virtues that children have: “A child does not know enmity, a child is a biblical teacher who knows no jealousy, and a child is a symbol of simplicity. Therefore, he who attacks a child attacks God.”

Remarking about the crisis, the Reverend said it is inhuman and unacceptable to take up an arm against a fellow human. To him the crisis is no longer a protests but the devil has stepped in and has hardened the hearts of men.

“When we take up arms we become inhumane. It is no longer a simple protest but the influence of the devil. Let us send away the devil that is in the house. This act has prove it and crowned it all,” he said.

“Poor innocent ones abandoned in their own pole of blood. They were searching on how to cross the line of innocence,” the Priest lamented, citing the case of the lone child, Victory that has gone viral and that of the woman who lost three of her kids and also passed away.

“God has planted in us a conscience to know the difference between good and bad, so no one does something without knowing if it is good or bad. We will all be judged and punished following how we each used this device (the conscience),” the Rev. warned.

He also noted how the incident is acting as a unifying factor in the country. “We are all far from these children, we do not even know them but from North to West, we are all united against their killing,” he remarked.

The mood of the congregation was changed to that of a mourning ground as the heartbroken mothers reflected and murmured in dismay to the gruesome act committed on the seven innocent souls.

Everywhere was as dead as a grave yard with some kneeling and begging for mercy sounds of sobbing could be heard.

“Child Slaughtered in the North, Child raped here, Child Killed there, Child aborted…STOP! STOP! STOP! Stop and reflect. Think about how you treat children even in your respective homes and ask God for mercy. Ask for forgiveness. Amen,” the Priest ended while the church maintained some silence before the prayer rights continued.

Like has been the case in streets for the past days, people were lighting candles after the Holy Mass and other discussions of the act continued with mother expressing disappointments at perpetrators of the act. “Such people can never know peace and their days are numbered,” one was overheard saying in anger.

This has been the atmosphere in churches and other solemn gatherings across the country since October 24th. Everyone wish this is the end and that these regions will witness a return to normalcy.

The ball is in the cord of the Government and disgruntled leaders of the crisis. Will they go on enjoying the blood of the innocent been shed on a daily bases or drop their pride and come to the table, at least for these seven souls.”
