Aimed at sensitizing Cameroonian road users on the special awareness, prevention, and road control campaign, and disadvantages of poor parking which is one of the major causes of road accidents according to Minister Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe, he launches operation zero accident which has since been welcomed with mixed reactions. Critics have brought up several reasons debunking the minister’s claim stating that poor parking only constitute a minor percentage of road accidents in Cameroon.

The “Operation Zero Accident” as the Minister dubbed it, was launched on Wednesday October 14th along the Yaounde- Douala high way and awaits full achievement-lowering road accident rate in the country by the end of 2020.

According to the release which was first sent out on October 2nd, 2020, the special awareness, prevention and road control campaign operation was part of the fight against traffic accidents.

To be carried out in two phases, the first will run from October 5th to November 29, the back-to-school period. The second phase was scheduled to run from November 30th, 2020, to January 31st, 2021 targeting year-end periods. Due to the increase in road traffic, these periods according to Minister Bibehe are the most accident-prone periods of the year.

The operations will be carried out by teams made up of officials of the Ministry of Transport supported by law enforcement agencies. But it will be coordinated by the Governors of the 10 regions of the country.

Any transgression by road users will be severely punished per the penalties provided in the regulations, Minister Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe reminded.

Critics have backlashed the Minister efforts saying that road accidents cannot be avoided on bad roads. To them, curbing road accidents in Cameroon has to commence with the enlargement and construction of modern roads.

Maintenance of the already available roads has to equally be called to the Minister’s mind. This is because until roads become dilapidated beyond recognition, they are hardly maintained in Cameroon. Also because, such maintenances are done only when high esteem visitors are expected in the country.
