How safe is the current polio vaccination?

Since the start of the vaccination campaign against polio virus in Cameroon, some parents have had mixed feelings to whether their kids should be vaccinated or note. The main reason behind this skepticism is not known but some people fear it could be the vaccine against the Coronavirus, we learnt.

The vaccine is currently administered to kids aged 0 to 5 years across 6 regions of Cameroon, barely three months after the country and the entire Africa was declared free of this virus.

Following this skepticism, some social media videos have shown a school teacher arguing with a vaccination team over the authenticity of the vaccine while another video shows a three-month-old baby who is believed to have died after receiving the vaccine.

However, Cameroon’s Public Health Minister, Dr. Manaouda Malachie on October 14th, 2020 called for a press conference, purposely to clear these doubts has revealed that he personally got his three-year-old daughter vaccinated against the polio virus.

While the vaccination comes too early for some people who consider that the country is completely free of the polio virus, rumors surrounding the COVID19 vaccine have played a great part in sowing fear among the population.

At the press conference, Minister Malachie underlined that being a polio-free country does not imply a stop in vaccination, given that the vaccines are to protect the kids against any possibility of contracting the virus should it resurface.

Just like the Director General of the World Health Organization had advised, the minister stressed that that some countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan are still harboring the virus which leaves a high probability that it can be transported to any other country.

Due to failure to vaccinate against this virus, Dr. Manaouda Measles have been recorded in 78 health districts in 8 regions of the country as well as the Polio type 2 virus which he says has been in circulation in some parts of the country since March 2020.

The affected regions include Littoral, Centre, Far North, North, Adamawa and East which the minister says are the first targeted areas for this vaccination in a bid to eradicate every least possibility.
