Cameroon: MINAT’s Director of Civil Protection Elected Director General of ICDO

Cameroonian, Mariatou Yap, Director of Civil Protection at the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT) was on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 elected as the Secretary General of the International Civil Defense Organization (ICDO).

The ICDO is an inter-governmental entity that has as role to contribute to states development through the provision of protection and assistance of the population as well as safeguard property and the environment.

She was elected during the 24th session of the general assembly of the organization that held from the 12th, to the 14th, of October 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland. She outnumbered her Lebanese counterpart by 30 votes to 23.

Mariatou Yap is replacing Russia’s Vladimir Kushinov as the first woman to head this international organization with over 20 years of experience in the domain of civil protection.

Expressing her joy for this mile stone, the winning diplomat praised the Head of State, President Paul Biya for endorsing her worthy of lending her humanitarian experience in the international scene.

“I will start by thanking my President H.E Mr. Paul Biya because he is the one who trusted me by submitting my candidacy to the ICDO and to all the ministers like the Minister of External Relations, the Minister of Territorial Administration, and all actors like the permanent mission in Geneva. All these people supported me during the campaigns and that is why today Cameroon has won the trophy,” MadamYap said.

According to Solomon Eheth, Cameroon’s Ambassador and Resident Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva attributed the victory to President Biya as main pilot of Cameroonian diplomacy.

“You can imagine that we are very happy, this is an important victory of Cameroonian diplomacy under the leadership of HE Paul Biya. This victory is a result a meticulous work of our diplomacy under the leadership of the Minister of External Relations and all the colleagues and Ambassadors everywhere. This is a very important position for Cameroon,” Mr. Eheth said.

As secretary General of the ICDO, Madam Yap is charged with joining the efforts of the 59 member states of the organization in responding to catastrophes threatening human existence across the world.
