Cameroonian Ebenezer Tafili Becomes WCO’s Deputy Director General of the Capacity Building Directorate

Cameroonian born, Ebenezer Tafili Gebding, based in Douala, economic capital of Cameroon has been appointed to the post of Deputy Director General of the Capacity Building Directorate at the World Customs Organization - WCO.

The information is contained in No. 244 of the Cameroonian Customs newsletter indicating that the Secretary General of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya, informed the Director General of Cameroonian Customs, Edwin Fongod Nuvaga, of the said promotion of his compatriot Monday, October 12th, 2020.

It should be noted that on the same October 12th, 2020, the World Customs Organization - WCO organized a virtual commemorative opening to mark the 50th Session of the Technical Committee on Customs Valuation - TCCV. 

It was chaired by Mr. Jan Birkhoff, the Secretary General of the WCO, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, the Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization -WTO, Mr. Yi Xiaozhun, the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce -ICC, Mr. John W.H. Denton AO, and speakers from several Member countries, including former chairpersons of the TCCV who addressed the Technical Committee.

Including current participants of the meeting and observers, former delegates, and staff of the WCO Secretariat, more than 170 participants from around the world registered for this event held amid covid-19 restraints.

Before his appointment to the new post, Tafili Gebding was Director of the WCO Regional Capacity Building Office for West and Central Africa -ROCB / WCA. He is a graduate of the National School of Administration and Magistracy - ENAM, promotion 1987-1989.

Between 1996-1999 and 1999-2000, he was head of the main customs office in Mamfe and head of the main customs office in Lobe respectively. He was equally head of the Unit for International Cooperation at the Directorate General of Customs from 2007-2017.

At the international level, Tafili Gebding has been the Coordinator of the Regional Working Group on Strategic Management for West and Central African Customs from 2009-2014. He has also been member of the Committee of Experts of the Conference of Directors General of Customs of the WCO-AOC Region from 2008-2016.

From 2014-2016, he equally served as Chief of Staff of the Vice-President of the WCO-West and Central Africa.

His most recent post was as Director of ROCB / AOC from July 2018- October 2020. The Cameroonian Douala based custom authority is due to resume activities in his new appointment post in the days ahead.
