Cameroon: Government Plans for New Strategies to Revive Tourism Sector Following Effects of COVID-19

Government is planning to revisit her tourism promotion strategy towards domestic and sub regional tourism as a means of overcoming the effects of #COVID19 on the sector.

The Cameroon tourism sector is one of the sectors in the Cameroonian economy that was hard hit by the health crisis. While addressing the situation during an Extraordinary session of The National Tourism board presided over by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute on Thursday October 1st, 2020, the Minister of Tourism and Leisure Bello Bouba Maigari told members of the National Tourism Board that the sector is suffering from the effects of the pandemic and needs to be stepped up.

PM Dion Ngute instructed both the public and private Stakeholders of the tourism sectors to work towards uplifting the sector deliberating on a reliable source of income and a possibility of scaling up youth employment in the sector.

Board members examined ways of supporting the tourism sector given that barrier measures against the virus are slowing relaxing in Cameroon. The administration, according to the Minister aims at sustaining the sector through these revival strategies.

On his part, the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze opted for a tax reduction and exemptions mechanisms as well as other necessary measures that can revive the sector.

While the sector remains an important source of income for Cameroon which is considered as Africa in miniature, thus attracting foreign curiosity, PM Dio Ngute urged the stakeholders to sit up in their commitment to rekindling activities in the sector.
