In a www.change.org petition, Verkijika Divine is calling on the Minister of Arts and culture to recognize the pivotal role that youths play in the contemporary music scene in Cameroon. In a social media campaign calling on musicians, fans and sympathisers, the young music producer declares:

Help us tell the Cameroon Minister of Arts and Culture; That Young people make up more than 70% the Cameroon Music Industry and therefore deserve enough voices on all activities especially their Authors Rights

Excerpts of a short interview with LeGideon below:

It is a noble drive but how does a petition on change.org get the Minister's attention?

Change.org signatures are just to show the public's support for the project. I will deposit a physical file at the ministry on Monday.

What has motivated you to start the campaign?

It's a sector I work in, and I have seen the systematic side-lining of young people in an industry where youth are the main actors and highest generators of income.

What about artists trade unions like SOCINADA and others? Aren't they better placed to follow up on artists rights and representation?

Verkijika Divine

SONACAM is the society that replaced SOCINADA, CMC and SOCAM. In the past 30 years, we have changed 6 societies: due to mismanagement and unnecessary politics. The big losers are the artists

We are mobilising groups of young artists based on their genre and will be bringing them for the general assembly and elections. But first we must keep the artists adequately informed on the stakes.

How do you expect the government to involve the youths? What activities?

We expect more young people to be invited in consultations; and especially in the general assembly to choose their leaders
