Mali's new president is set to be sworn into office this Friday.

While the health state of the deposed president Keita who left for medical attention in Bamako six days after he was released from detention by the ruling junta, which seized power on August is yet to be confirmed, an interim president is underway.

It has been five weeks after Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was overthrown and a former defense minister, Bah Ndaw, who was picked by the coup leader, Colonel Assimi Goita, to head a transitional government until elections are held will take over.

With Col Goita as his vice-president they will rule for a transition period of 18 months before an election will be conducted.

It should be noted that though the Junta wanted to run it over 2 years, 15-nation Economic Community of West African States had insisted that within 12 months it should hand over. Like the experts, Mahmoud Dicko, had equally urged for a swift return to civilian rule in Mali.

Bah Ndaw

Since August 18, when the mutineers detained Keita at gunpoint and forced him to resign a group of military officers, who call themselves the National Committee for the Salvation of the People-CNSP, has been controlling Mali.
