In July 2019, some political party leaders in Cameroon together with the Parliamentary body jointly concerted over ways by which they could maximize the contributions of Cameroonian Diaspora in nation building.

The leaders and representatives of some political parties held a working session in this regards in Yaounde with the parliamentary network on the Diaspora, Decentralization and Cross Border Corporation which is headed by Hon Handry Loui Ngatcha.

According to the development finance assessment funded by the UNDP, the Cameroonian Diaspora’s involvement in the development of their country is still very low compared with the level in countries at the same development level.

It is probably to this end that an office has been created in France to provide support for the Cameroon Diasporas willing to invest back in the country. This was recently announced by Cameroon’s Ambassador to France, André-Magnus Ekoumou.

While in the release the Ambassador has not stated type of support the bureau will be offering this group of Cameroonians but claims that the initiative will likely boost the Diaspora’s involvement in the development of Cameroon.

After an assessment study of the level of Diaspora involvement in the affairs of Cameroon, the report stated that "The low involvement of the Cameroonian Diaspora in the country's development, therefore, deserves to be addressed by in-depth studies ranging from the evaluation (even if it is approximate) of its savings potential to the search for specific instruments that can encourage Cameroonians living abroad to invest more in their country of origin."

However, after the July meeting, the officials suggested that the possibility for integration of the Diasporas into the country’s development processes could be facilitated by the recognition of their citizenship status.

While it remains unclear which assistance and by what means the France Ambassador intends to realize his project, the government is determined to get this set of citizens involved in State affairs.
