Cameroon: Jean-Claude Awomno, Cameroonian publisher Wins Fernando D'almeida International Poetry Prize 2020

Cameroonian Jean-Claude Awono, the owner of Ifriqiya editions and a teacher of letters has been named the best African poet.

It was on September 9th, 2020 that the jury of the 36th International Poetry Festival awarded Mr. Awono the "Fernando D'almeida International Poetry Prize 2020.

The platform’s jury unanimously voted him as the winner of this 2020 edition. The prize bears the name of the great Cameroonian, Beninese poet Fernando d'Almeida.

The press release which was published on September 9th, 2020, states that his works meet each of the three selection criteria of this award at a very high level.

Some of his collection that brought him with this award according to the release are: “His numerous books-collections of poetry, anthologies, participation in reviews, collective works containing his poems or articles”

Also, “his presence on numerous juries” and “his publishing activities as president of the Ifrikiya house” was calculated. The release equally mention “his support for more than 50 young poets whose works he prefaced and / or encouraged the publication and dissemination.”

“The creation and presidency of the Festi7 International Poetry Festival in Yaoundé, his responsibilities in the PEN CLUB of Cameroon, his presence in various international poetry festivals and various international book fairs,” as well as the “important lectures given on the poetry of his country.” were considerable facts that earned Mr. Awono this prestigious award, the release outlined.

According to the release, he equally “keeps a close watch on the young poetry of his country.” And his plans for this year’s 36th International Poetry Festival have been postponed until next year only because of the coronavirus pandemic.

 Awono emerged as winner over 9 other poets from 3 different African countries.

After every two years, the Fernando D'almeida International Poetry Prize is awarded to a French-speaking African poet residing in Africa and who has published at least 3 collections of poetry with recognized publishers.
