Following the setting up of the Central African regional office of INTERPOL in Yaoundé, the Government of Cameroon and the Central African Police Chiefs Committee-CAPCCO have signed a headquarters follow up agreement that makes Cameroon seat of the committee.
This agreement is a follow up of the 2007 set up of the Permanent secretariat of CAPCCO in Yaoundé, capital of Cameroon.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Yaoundé, on Friday, August 28th, 2020. On behalf of Cameroon, the Minister of External Relation-MINREX, Lejeune Mbella Mbella signed the agreement and Shey Jones Yembe, Head of the Infrastructure commission of the Committee signed for CAPCCO.
Set up at the request of the Secretary General of the International Criminal Police Organization-INTERPOL in 1997, CAPCCO is an eight members committee made up of the Economic and Monetary Committee of Central African States- CEMAC. Members in the committee include; Cameroon, Central African Republic-CAR, Soa Tome and Principe Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC.
The purpose of CAPCCO was to improve cooperation between law enforcement institutions among member countries as well as enhance members’ efficiency in the prevention and fight against transnational crime in the CEMAC region.
The committee provides mainly technical support and share facilities information between member countries hence enhancing security of movement of person, goods and capital with the region according to the CAPCCO representative, Shey Jones Yembe, CRTV reported.
Besides ensuring security in the region, better coordination of activities of specialized institutions is equally expected from the committee.
