MTN Appoints Ralph Mupita as CEO

After Rob Shuter said earlier this year that he would not renew his contract when it expires in 2021, Ralph Mupita who was MTN Group’s chief financial officer-CFO has been appointed to take over from him as the CEO of the telecommunications provider from September 1.

Since April, 2017, Mupita has served as MTN Group’s chief financial officer. While he becomes the CEO, his predecessor, Shuter will join BT Group in the UK as CEO of the company’s Enterprise unit.

According to a statement from MTN on Wednesday, Mupita has, “played a critical role in the development and execution of the group’s strategy, capital allocation processes and financial performance as well as in the resolution of a number of complex regulatory matters.”

Following his appointment chairman Mcebisi Jonas said that they were pleased to have appointed someone of his caliber with a rigorous and extensive search. In his words, “After a rigorous and extensive search process, we are pleased to have appointed someone of Ralph’s calibre, experience and ability to fill the group president and CEO position,”

He added that, “Ralph’s experience as the group CFO, strong knowledge of our businesses and markets, as well as successful background in financial services, M&A and emerging markets, place him in an excellent position to lead the growth and sustainability of the business going forward.”

On the 31st of August, Shuter will step down from his executive responsibilities and will then support Mupita, until early next year, 2021 at the end of his fixed-term contract.

The company has it headquarter in Johannesburg and it is a pure-play emerging markets mobile telecommunications operator at the forefront of technological and digital changes, according to information from their website.


The South African multinational mobile telecommunications company operates in many African, European and Asian countries and was formerly M-Cell.

The newly appointed CEO who will resume work from September is a graduate of the University of Cape Town with a degree in engineering and an MBA. Before joining MTN Group, for five years Mupita was the CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets. This is a business that provided financial services to individuals and companies in 19 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. At the time, it manages over R1 trillion of customer assets under management.
