Circumstances and culture surrounding marriage proposals in the Latuka tribe in South Africa has drawn the attention of many.
According to sources, once ready for marriage a man just needs kidnaps a woman he loves and inform her father later for approval. The man employs the help of other men to lay an ambush to chase and catch the desired lady.
This is a rare culture because people are common with the African culture of giving a girl child out for marriage which is fast wiping out because youths now prefer to marry out of their choice.
While in her suitor’s home, the lady’s father is then informed and left with a choice to either approve or disapprove. As a sign of approval from the father, he will beat suitor. This beating is equally a sign that since it is about sacrifice, he is willing to be beaten for the sake of the woman he loves.
Nevertheless, the degree of the beating is unsure.
Sources reveal that the Latuka tribe is known for its communal life to date. No single person rule over them as they practice a system of sharing. These people just have a group of elders authorized to give them guidance when needed.
However, they will not give hid to many forms of religious penetration and cultural activities.
The unique marriage culture has recently been a center of debate. To others the culture is a barrier to the rights of girls in the tribe against the persons they love. However to others, it is a deep-rooted culture and victims are aware and pre-prepared.
