Cameroon: Two Soldiers Caught Yet in Another Crime With a wildlife trafficker.

The professionalism of Cameroon soldiers have been recently questioned as some continuously gets caught in dubious acts. Two soldiers and an alleged wildlife trafficker were reportedly arrested on June 7th, 2020 in the Center Region, Yaounde after been caught illegally with about 400kg of pangolin scales.

The alleged included; two soldiers, a former sergeant of the Presidential Guard and a second class navy. They were intercepted in the course of selling the scales, by the elements of Odza Gendarmerie Brigade and the Mimboman Gendarmerie with the assistance of the Non-governmental organization for the fight against wildlife criminality, LAGA and in collaboration with the Delegation of Forestry and Wildlife.

Upon interception, the sergeant claimed the goods were given to him by one woman to sell. After investigations, it was disclosed that the woman in question is the man’s mother and a well-known bush-meat vendor at the Ngolndongo wildlife market in Yaounde.

This dubious act is one of the noted illegal practices within the wildlife sector of the country with many protected mammal species trafficked and sold out of the country.

Meanwhile, the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), pangolins are the most traffic and poached mammal in the world, primarily due to the demand from Chinese Consumers for their supposed medical qualities.


About 200,000 pangolins are estimated to be eaten annually despite it threatening extinction.
