Yesterday June 3rd 2020, the Ugandan town of Namugongo in the North-East region of Kampala saw an unusual celebration of a national public holiday due to coronavirus restrictions.

June 3rd every year is a national public holiday in Uganda. It is set aside to commemorate the 45 martyrs, both Catholic and Anglican who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then king of Buganda between January 31st 1885 and January 27th 1887. In details there were 23 Anglicans and 22 Catholics.

In 1886, the king equally ordered the burning to death of 32 young converts in Namugongo for refusing to renounce Christianity.

This day for decades has been a national holiday where people across Namugongo and the country queue to visit the shrine in honor of the martyrs who stood for their faith to death.
