Public health Minister Dr. Manaouda Malachie has warned that Cameroon is entering a ‘complicated phase’ in the fight against covid-19. He made the statement while delivering the report on the situation of the pandemic in the country, May 25th, 2020.

“It is important to note that we are entering a complicated phase of the pandemic. Therefore, more than ever, we must protect ourselves, protect our families and protect others by observing barrier measures,” Dr. Malachie said.

This warning follows a questionable surge in figures last week where 500 new cases were recorded in one day. This sudden rise is no surprise to many experts who had warned of a possible rise in figures following the relaxation of government preventive measures some weeks ago.

“Wear a mask when going out and wash your hands regularly,’ the minister reiterated, assuring a nationwide sensitization campaign to increase awareness and practically carry out the necessary barrier measures.

This statement is now used as ridicule among Cameroonians who think it is not enough as a measure from the government. At least, not when there is no water in some areas, not when markets are operating in full capacity, not when bars and other public social gatherings spots are still going against the distancing measure, many have argued.
