At 70, Uganda’s Football Legend Collapses, Dies on a Walk

Described as ‘a genius class of the act’ by a soccer web, one of Uganda’s most celebrated legends has passed on at 70. Jimmy Kirunda is reported dead, Monday May 25th 2020 in Bwaise Kampala.

His dead was announced by Ahmed Hussein, Communication Officer of the Soccer governing physique (FUFA) who said Kirunda collapsed while taking a walk at the outskirts of Kampala, Bwaise.

The legend led his team as captain in Uganda’s lone African Cup of National finals in 1987. While in his playing days, he played for KCCA FC, SC Villa, Express FC, as well as in the Abu Dhabi Sports in the United Arab Emirates. Between 1989 and 1996, he served as coach of Uganda Cranes.

He made lauded records in three AFCON Tournaments where he was captain of the Uganda Cranes. His great contribution to the historic Ugandan Victory at the 78th edition of the tournament in Ghana, 1999 is one that remains fresh in the minds of fans.

While pushing through with his professional career, Kirunda is said to have been supervisor of several clubs in which he transmitted his admired soccer potentials. He took charge of Bell FC, KCCA FC, Buikwe Red Stars, Cooperative FC, among others.

He once said during an interview while trying to get fans understand the reason behind his outstanding team, “We were a great team and played good football, when you want to be a champion you have to win big games.” May his soul rest in peace.
