It was in a diplomatic letter from Burundi’s Foreign Ministry to WHO’s Regional Office for Africa  that  WHO’s representative Dr.Walter Kazadi Mulmbo, Prof. Daniel tarzy, Dr. Ruhana Mirindi Bisimwa, and Dr. Jean Pierre Mulunda Nkata were ordered to evacuate the country by May 15th 2020.

burundi crisis

The upcoming election that has been scheduled for May 20th, 2020, has seven candidates against President Pierre Nkurunziza, who has been in power since 2005. Authorities announced on April 7 that elections would go ahead despite the global spread of Coronavirus.

In 2015 there was a violent strike in Burundi that cost hundreds of lives. It resulted from President Nkurunziza announcement of his rerun of the third term into elections contrary to the two terms as the country’s constitution stipulates.

There is fear of the unknown because he promised to not run for the elections again but has since shown no signs of backsliding.
