MINSANTE Reveals Shocking Maternal mortality Rate in Cameroon from Complicated Pregnancies

Yesterday, Friday May 8th, 2020, in Yaounde, during the ceremony to commemorate the African Day to reduce Maternal and Neonatal Mortality, Cameroon’s Minister Malachie Manaouda of public health disclosed that every year, about twenty-two thousand (22000) newborns and four thousand (4000) women die while putting to birth due to complicated pregnancies.

This revelation shocked many but surprising enough, the Minister said there has been an improvement in the number of maternal mortality rate across the country.

He indicated that, the maternal mortality rate has reduced from 782 to 406 maternal deaths per 1000 live births amounting to a 40% decrease.

As per the neonatal statistics Minister Manaouda said for the past fifteen years, the figures have not changed. This particularly revelation concerning neonatal statistics has got critics worried. They argue that it is very rare to have such and that it either drops or rises.

It was also an opportunity for the national health boss to applaud health care workers and midwives across the country, who strives to save the lives of pregnant women and their newborns on a daily basis.

Meantime he said the Government of Cameroon is closely working with its correspondents to combat this fate I Cameroon.

However critics have blamed this alarming number of deaths to poor health facilities. They are calling on the government to modernized health facilities and recruit quality health workers on merits.
