Following a series of allegedly racist attacks, Father Patrick Asomugha, a Nigerian priest is stepping down from his Roman Catholic parish in Germany.
Father Patrick Asomugha has since 2017 been the parish priest of the Saint Francis of Assisi in Queidersbach municipality in western Germany.
Despite the support of the congregation, after a series of attacks, the local diocese has agreed that his position had become indefensible.
Last October, 2019, to support, he was made to lead the church of more than 600 people in an anti-racist service. But it has not limited attacks and threats from the unknown.
According to reports, vandals have broken twice into the vicarage where his car tires were swiftly cut. But most scaring, was last month’s threat which was a death threat pinned to the garage door.
He has confessed that in as much as he tries to do his Father’s work, it had become near impossible to live normally. To this his diocese has said it would be irresponsible of them to expose him to further threats. Father will therefore be moved to somewhere else.
In solidarity with the priest, the Bund der Deutschen Katholischen Jugend (BDKJ), an umbrella of Catholic youth organizations in Germany, said it was horrified that racism had forced him out. They have expressed a big disgust over this attitude in church. It said it was “deeply ashamed.”
