Owing to the growing desire for world peace and a return to normalcy, the French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed hopes that the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council will, in the coming days, discuss and endorse U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for a ceasefire in all global conflicts amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

His proposition holds that the powers should conduct a video Conference call during which this issue shall be addressed for a quick decision that will ensure an effective ceasefire in the world.

As concerns for the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic grows, more worries are being directed towards hindrances to the fight for normalcy. Given that most countries have been in one conflict or the other, UN Secretary General on March 23rd, 2020 had called for a ceasefire in all conflicts around the globe in a bid to direct more attention to what has been termed by many as the “3rd World War.”

Since the escalation of the virus across the world, Macron has been pushing for a new global coalition. In an interview with the French radio RFI broadcast on Wednesday April 15th, 2020, said he is waiting for agreement from Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold the 5-country video conference for a concrete decision to be made.

World veto powers

He confirmed that some powers have already given in for the conference meeting sighting that, “China’s “President Xi Jinping confirmed to me he agrees. (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump confirmed to me he agrees. (British) Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed to me he agrees,” Macron said. “I think President Putin will agree too. When he does, we can have this video conference and therefore endorse it (Guterres’ call) with great solemnity, strength, and even more efficiency,” Macron said.

During a closed council meeting on Thursday April 16, 2020, secretary-general Guterres warned that the pandemic is threatening international peace and security which could potentially lead “to an increase in social unrest and violence that would greatly undermine our ability to fight the disease.”

However, Guterres had received a number of positive reactions to his call from a few countries which he said included -Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Colombia, Libya, Myanmar, the Philippines, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen. But he warned that turning words into peace will be enormously difficult, expressing hopes for practice action.

Five supper powers

It is therefore worth noting that since the leaders of the Ambazonia Defense forces in Cameroon accepted to give in to the S-G’s call, there is yet to be peace in the two English-speaking parts of the country. More killings and lootings have been witnessed lately from both conflicting parties, living the locals in constant panic.
