UN Opposes Discrimination, Racism and Xenophobia Amidst World Combat Against COVID-19

UN has adopted resolutions on Global solidarity on COVID-19 with a focus on the respect of human rights, opposing any form of discrimination, racism, and xenophobia.

It was on Thursday, April 1st, 2020 that the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted at his resolution, calling for an increase in global solidarity and international cooperation against the spread of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

According to the report, this resolution was prepared by Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Indonesia, Liechtenstein and Ghana under the sponsorship of 188 countries. The decision was approved during the 193 member assembly.

This stands as the first UN resolution on the COVID-19 outbreak, since the escalation of the virus to a pandemic with above 1 million infections.

More emphases were laid on the need for assistance to the poor and the most affected countries facing the devastating effects of COVID-19 like the disruption of economy, global travels as well as trade.

The resolutions also highlighted the need to respect human rights and oppose ant from of discrimination, racism and xenophobia in the response to the pandemic.

Nigerians Manifesting Against Xenophobia

According to the compiled data from the US-Based John Hopkins University, worldwide infection is above 1 million with over 5300 deaths and over 211000 recoveries.
