The multinational waste management company in Cameroon, HYSACAM, has reportedly started three projects for electricity generation which according to them have no equivalence in Sub-Saharan African.

The first of these projects consist of the construction of a power plant that will run on gas generated by the 360,000tons of waste dumped every year at the site in Yaounde. It is called the “Landfill Gas and Use” and situated at the landfill site at Nkolfoulou, a village in Yaounde.

Reports from HYSACAM show that before now, the gas from this landfill was captured and flared. However, with the different administrative reform in Cameroon energy sector, the company says an alternative use, which is the electricity generation has been realized.

It has been revealed that at the end of the project of this plant, there will be an estimated installed capacity of 10mw which will serve the electrical needs of over 580000 households in Yaounde neighborhoods.

The second projects measures to a capacity of 60MV. It is located at PK10 in Douala and the project is built on the same way as that of Yaounde “Landfill Gas and Use”.

The last project is based on proven technique whereby biodegradable materials are collected from household waste to produce a controlled anaerobic digestion process in tanks. It is called the Biomethanization Project and it is located in West Cameroon. It has a capacity of 2MV.

Meantime, inhabitants in the North West and South West Regions of the country where electricity has become gold, hard to find but expensive, longs that the projects goes operational so as to limit their suffering.
